Deshaun Watson, quarterback for the Cleveland Browns, will miss the team’s pre-season final game against the Seattle Seahawks and this is likely to generate some talking points among fans. The decision comes after Watson had a sore arm earlier in the week though he took part in practice completely on Thursday.
The Browns front office has stressed that it is a preventive measure and now their attention is turning to getting Watson ready for their season opener versus the Dallas Cowboys. Head coach Kevin Stefanski mentioned he was not overly worried about the soreness and anticipates that Watson will be ready come Week 1.
Since his shoulder surgery in November, Watson has yet to play a single pre-season snap. Although various fans were looking forward to seeing him against Seattle, the team qualifies it as taking care of his future health and preparing him for the regular season.
This news highlights the tough call NFL teams have to make regarding whether their starters need real games or if it would be safer not to play them. It is justifiable with Watson’s big contract and high prospects for the Browns this season.
Watson did not participate in any preseason games but he joined other teams practicing together. He had an opportunity to face live defences, learn how to get with his group and practice timing with them.
Despite not having preseason reps, the Browns are convinced that Watson will be up to the task of leading his team at the crucial stage. The first game against Dallas in Week 1 will be a very important test for both teams and also an opportunity for Watson’s performance to be observed.
