McCanna Anthony “Mac” Sinise, a talented multi-instrumentalist and the son of actor Gary Sinise, died on January 5, 2024, after a long battle with rare cancer called chordoma. He was 33 years old.
A Passion for Music
Mac Sinise was born on June 10, 1990, to Gary Sinise and Moira Harris. At an early age, he developed a passion for music and started drumming at 9. He later learned to play piano, harmonica, and other instruments. He graduated from the USC Thornton School of Music, where he studied songwriting and composition.
He performed with his father’s Lt. Dan Band as a substitute drummer and collaborated with other musicians on various projects. In the final months of his life, he recorded his album, “Resurrection and Revival,” which featured original compositions and a version of “Shenandoah,” on which he played harmonica. The album will be released soon, and the proceeds will be donated to the Gary Sinise Foundation, a nonprofit organization that supports veterans and first responders.

A Courageous Fight
Mac Sinise was diagnosed with chordoma in August 2018, just two months after his wife Moira was diagnosed with stage three breast cancer. Chordoma is a rare type of cancer that originates in the spine and affects about 300 people in the US each year. It has no cure and often causes severe pain and disability.
Mac Sinise underwent several surgeries, radiation, and chemotherapy to treat his cancer, but it continued to spread and affect his mobility and speech. However, he never gave up on his music and adapted to new performing and recording methods. He also worked for the Gary Sinise Foundation as assistant manager of education and outreach until January 2020, when he stepped away due to his health.
He died on January 5, 2024, at 3:25 pm, surrounded by his family and friends. He was laid to rest on January 23, 2024.

A Loving Tribute
Gary Sinise confirmed his son’s passing in a tribute posted on his foundation’s website, in which he expressed his grief and gratitude for having Mac as his son. He wrote, “We were blessed to have you in our lives as son, brother, and friend…and we will miss you and love you for eternity.”
He also praised his son’s resilience and generosity, saying, “He fought an uphill battle against a cancer that has no cure, but he never quit trying. He faced his battle with grace, courage, and love. Even with one setback after another, he never stopped living and learning, creating and giving, and loving.”
He added, “He was an incredible inspiration to those who knew and loved him, and he will always be in our hearts.”
